It was surely a great year in music–when isn’t it a great year in music?–but this year held some particularly interesting surprises. 2010 will mark the year electronic music (sort of) made its way into the mainstream. Before this year, I never would have even considered putting an electronic song in my top 30.

This year I have 6. 2010 also saw a number of incredible new bands like Broken Bells and Jamaica burst onto the scene (well, at least my personal scene) with some songs that not only made this year’s top 30 list, but my top 30 favorites ever list (trust me, this is a difficult feat). Hopefully this trend continues into 2011 and beyond. Gotta love adding great new music to the library. And of course, 2010 also saw some of the big names reestablish themselves at the top of the heap. Kanye West and Arcade Fire and The Black Keys all continue to prove that they’re the best at what they do.

Making a list of the 30 best songs of the year proved to be a lot tougher than I thought. Lists aren’t really my thing, unless we’re talking top 100 songs of the 90′s on VH1. The songs really are all so good, and there are so many to pick from. But I decided to do my best and narrow it down to the 30 that I think defined music in 2010. You may notice a lack of catchy pop radio songs, but fuck that. So after another great 365, here they are. The top tunes from oh ten. Enjoy.
